Levi’s launched their famous 646 bell bottoms in 1969, which quickly defined the following decade, since then this unique flared shape has had 2 distinct resurgences after its most successful decade.
In the early 2000s, low-waisted jeans with a slightly smaller leg opening were the trend, mostly being popular for women. More recently, a wider leg opening has gained popularity quite quickly for both genders.
The U.S. Navy adopted trousers with a wide leg opening in the early 1800s, which to them, resembled a bell.
