Starting out in 1976, Jean-Paul Gaultier started his eponymous brand with his then boyfriend Francis Menuge and quickly gained a nickname, “l’enfant terrible” for his shocking work, which greatly contrasted the current styles in the fashion industry.

Taking inspiration from street styles of the time as well as unique materials, including garbage, he gained a reputation for breaking boundaries in the industry and quickly rose to prominence by the late 80s/early 90s.

Tragedy struck Gaultier when his long time partner Francis passed away from AIDS during the crisis in the 90s, and from that Jean-Paul created one of his famous designs. This Safe Sex Forever Tattouage graphic.
